GP Patient Surveys which meet DES requirements

Back to Electoral Reform Research

ERS:R has created a survey package designed for Practice Managers to meet the requirements for patient surveys as directed under the DES for 2011/12. The package has been created using a tried and tested approach for conducting patient surveys and aims to meet all the requirements of the DES, but in addition, to provide you with the actionable results to engage more successfully with patients in the future.

The Electoral Reform Group has been involved with patient engagement at a grass roots level for many years. Our ballot administration division has helped establish PCTs and PCGs as well as Foundation Trusts and is well known for integrity and impartiality in patient involvement. Our Research division now offers the same peace of mind to Practice Managers tasked with conducting patient surveys.

Our survey package includes

  • A paper questionnaire (in English) for distribution to patients in the surgery.
  • An online version, to be hosted on the surgery’s website for patients to complete and return to ERS:R. The link to the survey can be advertised through posters, leaflets, appointment cards etc. Translations available for a small additional cost.
  • Customised questions to reflect local issues raised by the PRG and other sources such as complaints analysis.
  • ERS:R to receive all questionnaires, complete the analysis of responses and provide a report of findings. The report will show variation by different demographic groups with recommendations for improvement.
  • Guidance on how to distribute questionnaires, how to deal with special needs (e.g. translations) and how to interpret the results.

The questionnaire has been designed to cover the patient experience relating to their last visit. The questions focus on outcomes. For example, whether the patient was able to get an appointment at a time which suited them rather than asking a series of questions about preferences about opening hours in general. A report will show variation by different demographic groups with recommendations for improvement. We provide actionable results to help improve patient care.
